Khaled's thesis focuses on integrating the concept of planetary limits into life cycle assessment studies of buildings and neighborhoods. Buildings exert significant environmental pressure, and current assessment based on comparative LCA is not sufficient to determine whether these pressures respect planetary limits. The aim of this research is to use the concept of planetary limits to carry out an absolute environmental study of buildings, while taking into account aspects of temporality and regionalization.
Life-cycle assessment is a method to assess the environmental impacts of buildings and infrastructures throughout their life cycle, from the extraction of raw materials through to their end-of-lifetime handling.
